Is there a market for these types of computers?
They are called "HPC" and yes. It is called High performance computing. A few people sell machines like this.. IBM, SGI, Sun, Cray (If they are still around, I believe SGI bought them a long time ago)
NASA refers to high end computing as "Super Computing". Base price for a low end model is usually in the 100K range.
I think low end computers and "distributed computing" is the way to go. It eliminated single points of failure. The downside is it introduces more variables into the computing platform.
